Farmers began to actively buy saltpeter after the price reduction

At the beginning of March, wholesale suppliers of KAS sold the product more expensively than ammonium nitrate. Recommended retail prices for KAS — 18.8 UAH/t with VAT, for ammonium nitrate — 17.7-18.1 UAH/t, with VAT.

"Nitrate is bought by farmers very actively at the beginning of March, the season is really hot. The spring began with a strange situation - there is almost no urea freely available from the manufacturer, there is a queue for KAS, and the price of KAS is higher than the price of ammonium nitrate," the report says.

This happened due to the fact that saltpeter was less popular in January-February due to the quick spring, warming and the almost absence of frozen-thawed soil in the fields of Ukraine. On February 19, OSTCHEM announced a drop in nitrate prices by UAH 2.7 thousand/t, as a result of which "the market literally boiled over in March."

KAS was sold by wagons or in large batches at prices of 17-17.5 thousand UAH/t, ammonium nitrate — 16.6-17.5 thousand UAH/t, including VAT.

"Right now, the sale of saltpeter is at its peak in recent months, traders note high activity, there is enough saltpeter in warehouses, and producers delivered as many as 71,000 tons of ammonium nitrate to the market in February. Rapid warming can quickly cut off demand, but it seems that farmers delayed purchases and did not cross out ammonium nitrate from the list of necessary fertilizers," the publication writes.
